The clock is ticking on the ability to copy analogue tapes to digital formats. VCRs or camcorders that performed these tasks are now obsolete or nonexistent and replacement machines or spare parts are now very scarce. The tapes themselves some now over 30 years old may have deteriorated to the extent that they are now non-playable meaning your precious family memories are lost forever. Now might be a good time to consider having all your old videotapes transferred to either DVD or USB and keep your memories safe. As more time passes, there is a greater risk of increased tape deterioration. This makes the tape more difficult to play and costly to migrate because remedial actions will be required to make it play properly. Waiting also results in the reduced availability of playback devices that are in good Condition. The information stored on these analog tapes needs to be migrated to a newer format if it is to remain accessible. With a new DIGITAL format a future migration to newer technology should be much simpler and much cheaper. A review of current storage should be reviewed approximately every 5-10 years in order to preserve content. It is good practice to make multiple copies and store at different locations.
